Newcomers School: A Story

The Doris Henderson Newcomers School serves recently arrived immigrant and refugee students in grades 3-12 who are novice English speakers. Focused instruction is provided by staff members in English as a Second Language. In addition, content area objectives are integrated into ESL lessons to provide students access to Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and English Language Arts curriculum. Art, Physical Education, and focused reading intervention are also offered.

Our staff is committed to helping students adjust to the American school system and culture. Field trips into the community provide students the opportunity to learn about and experience important people and places in their new surroundings. Field trips also build much needed background knowledge for students. Families are important and welcomed partners in the educational process of our students. Adult literacy classes are offered to our families to empower them to progress in their English development. K-12 tutoring and childcare is provided during those sessions.

A Child’s Story

During my amazing teaching experience in the Volta Region of Ghana, it was a treat to supply my students with crayons, pencils, and paper so they could use their imaginations to write their own matching stories. One day, one of my 5th grade students waited patiently for me after class to share her artwork. She told me that she had never had the opportunity to write her own story and to use crayons to draw pictures. She was just one of my many students that had very little resources and no school supplies to call her own.

I was so touched – by providing essential school supplies, the children were inspired to learn and put their creative and thinking skills to work! No child should go without a pack of Crayons to call their own” provide backpacks filled with essential school supplies like crayons, notebooks, and colored pencils – and unique pieces of art work created by a child in the United States.
